Build the systems
that make the market.
Pelagic is small and moves fast. We're hiring our first engineer — you'll own the software that powers a live market-making operation on Kalshi sports event contracts.
01 / The Role
Founding Engineer
About Pelagic
Pelagic Trading is a specialist quantitative market-making firm focused on sports event contracts on Kalshi. We quote thousands of markets across major U.S. sports, providing the liquidity that keeps prices reflective of real-world probabilities. Our edge comes from proprietary pricing models built on sport-specific fundamentals, disciplined position management, and a willingness to make markets where others won't.
We are small, senior, and software-led. The engineering we do is the firm — quality of execution, not headcount, is how we win.
What you’ll own
- Real-time pricing and market-state UIs that traders rely on during live events
- Order-management logic between our pricing models and Kalshi's API
- Risk dashboards — positions, exposure, correlated-event limits
- Market-data ingestion, storage, and backtesting infrastructure
- Internal tooling for quants to iterate on models quickly
What we’re looking for
- You've shipped full-stack software in production — real systems people depended on
- Strong React + TypeScript; comfortable backend in Node or Python
- You understand real-time data, WebSockets, and low-latency UI patterns
- You write code that's clean because you care, not because someone told you to
- You're comfortable with ambiguity and high ownership
Nice to have
- Prior work at a prop firm, hedge fund, or trading-tech company
- Experience with Kalshi, prediction markets, sportsbooks, or similar
- Time-series databases, PostgreSQL at scale, market-data plumbing
- AWS/GCP, Docker, infra-as-code
What we offer
- Base salary of $145,000–$185,000, depending on experience
- Target annual bonus of 15–25% of base — individual and firm performance
- A firm-performance bonus on top, tied directly to Pelagic's P&L
- Meaningful equity — first-engineer stake in Pelagic's upside. Details at offer.
- Medical, dental, vision; 401(k) with match; flexible PTO
- $5,000 home-office setup stipend and $1,000/yr recurring
- $2,000/yr learning & development budget
- Fully remote in the United States
- A small team. Real ownership. Intellectual honesty. Room to fail.
